A Word from Linda...

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. -NKJ

Be Anxious for Nothing!

by Linda Lee

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are not to worry or be anxious about anything. God tells us in His Word that we are to take everything that concerns us to Him in prayer (Phil 4:6). We can know God's peace no matter what difficulty we may encounter.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (Phil 4:6 NKJ)

With thanksgiving we are to make our requests to God - even in times of adversity. How can we be thankful in the midst of troubles? We can be thankful if we entrust ourselves and our circumstances to God, believing that He loves us, only wants good things for us, and is willing to help us. And we can believe this because these things are recorded in Scriptures: God loves us (1 John 4:9-10); He promised He will withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly [those in Christ] (Psa. 84:11); and Jesus told the man suffering from leprosy that He was willing to heal him (Matt. 8:2-3).

The best thing we can do in a crisis, or in dealing with any problem, is not to run from God but to run to God, our Father and talk to Him. When we talk everything over with God, cast all of our cares on Him about that particular situation then we can enter into His rest. We can know His peace which passes all understanding. Then we are able to be thankful in the midst of whatever we are going through because we are trusting God to take care of it all.

Anxiety is a terrible thing, it is really abnormal fear and torment. The Webster Dictionary defines anxiety as:

1 : painful uneasiness of mind over an anticipated ill 2 : abnormal apprehension and fear often accompanied by physiological signs (as sweating and increased pulse), by doubt about the nature and reality of the threat itself, and by self-doubt.

Have you ever thought about the wasted time and needles pain (uneasiness of mind) over an event that may not even happen? This is one of the primary traps of the enemy. Satan knows if he can get us thinking about all the many possible ills and disasters that may befall us, we have been effectively put on the shelf, useless for God's purpose. I believe that one of the subtlest weapons of the devil is to get Christians completely tied up in knots in worry and defeat, robbing them of joy, which the Bible says is our strength (Neh. 8:10).

There was a time when my life was in such turmoil that I could not even pray effectively. Coming from a background of emotional abuse and neglect, the stresses and anxiety that I felt spilled over into my prayer life. I would desperately pray for myself, intercede for a family member, or pray over a stressful situation, not really trusting God for anything I was asking Him. Other Christians used to say to me, "Why don't you just trust God?" I didn't know what was wrong.

I was so full of anxiety that often I couldn't even pray, or if I prayed about something, it was a useless litany of repetitive phrases because I did not believe my prayers would be answered. Looking back, now I call them worry prayers. They were faithless prayers, which God couldn't answer. I didn't realize that I was operating in fear, setting myself up so that I could not receive anything from the Lord (James 1:7).

I recall another time when I was under extreme duress having experienced a series of personal tragedies, one right after another - a divorce, loss of my children, family and friends, a job loss, chronic health problems, then a house fire which left me with only the clothes on my back. After the fire, people were comparing me with Job in the Bible.

I remember strange things happening to me when I felt so stressed. Once I was driving on a freeway, cruising along in one lane when suddenly, I found myself in another lane where a moment before a brown van had been driving alongside me. I had no idea how I got there, nor how a collision was avoided. I had a similar experience another day at a traffic signal.

My mind was so distracted that I could hardly drive a car; I got a fistful of parking tickets because I kept reading the parking signs backwards. I was filled with fear and dread. I couldn't put my finger on exactly what was wrong but I felt as though something terrible was about to happen. That is anxiety.

Job said, "Therefore my anxious thoughts make me answer, because of the turmoil within me." (Job 20:2 NKJ)

Strong's Concordance defines anxious in the Greek as: ca` iph or divided (in mind). When we worry or allow ourselves to get anxious we are operating from a divided mind. How can anyone make a wise decision if his mind is divided? In James 1, God tells us that when we worry we are not in faith; we are doubting God. We are like the waves of the sea being driven and tossed by the wind.
James 1:5-8
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (NKJ)
When we worry we are double-minded, unstable in all our ways. We have positioned ourselves where we cannot receive anything from the Lord!

Doubting is serious business

The opposite of faith is fear. When we grow anxious or worry, we are in fear, doubting God's love and concern for us and His ability to take care of us.

God calls an unbelieving heart a wicked heart (Heb. 3:12 AMP). And the New Century Version calls it an evil heart that will turn you away from the living God. In Revelation 21:6 doubters, or unbelievers, are called cowardly and listed with the abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and liars who shall have their part in the lake of fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

The Darby translation says, "
But to the fearful and unbelieving, [and sinners], and those who make themselves abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part [is] in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone; which is the second death." (Rev. 21:6)

Now read it from The Message translation:
Revelation 21:6
Then he said, "It's happened. I'm A to Z. I'm the Beginning, I'm the Conclusion. From Water-of-Life Well I give freely to the thirsty. Conquerors inherit all this. I'll be God to them, they'll be sons and daughters to me. But for the rest—the reckless and faithless, degenerates and murderers, sex peddlers and sorcerers, idolaters and all liars —for them it's Lake Fire and Brimstone. Second death!"
Notice that anxious worriers are referred to as the faithless. What is not of faith is sin. Therefore, worrying is sin. And the Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrew 11:6). If we want to please God, we will learn to walk by faith, believing Him. That includes believing Him for all those things that concern us. A believer trusts God.

In Jeremiah we find that doing things God's way is the path to blessing.
Jer. 17:7-8
7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD.
8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit. (NKJ)
Here the word anxious is defined as: to be afraid (careful, sorry), sorrow, take thought. Jesus tells us to take no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow, or each day, will have enough troubles of its own.
Matt. 6:34
"So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble." (NKJ)
Jesus knew that our days would be full of reasons to worry. He also told us that in the world we would have tribulation but cheer up for He has overcome the world! (John 16:33) God does not want us to be anxious. He wants us to relax and enjoy our life! We all need to take responsibility for our life and give attention to those things for which we are accountable. But we are also to pray about everything, casting all our care upon Him, for He cares for you and me (1 Pet 5:6-7).

Jesus said that He came that we may have life, and may have it more abundantly (John 10:10). The Amplified version says, "...in abundance, to the full, until it overflows." We may have the abundant life Jesus suffered, died and was resurrected to give us when we learn to trust God for our life - all of it.

Let's trust God and obey Him. All we have to do is believe Him and take Him at His word. God will do the rest.
Be anxious for nothing!

-Walking in God's grace and favor,

Living Life One Day at a Time- "So don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time. Matt 6:34 (TLB)
