A Word from Linda...

Isaiah 30:21

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." (NIV)

Hearing God's Voice

By Linda Lee

Do you ever have trouble hearing from God? Have you found yourself needing guidance from God, yet after praying and reading God's Word, still felt confused or unsure about what to do?

I've had that experience. I knew His written Word and acting on it changed my life. But there have been times of uncertainty when I had to make decisions about things the Word didn't specifically address. Times like when my husband and I had to decide where to move in another city or which church to attend.

God leads us by His written Word and also by the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. God's Word and the inward witness are two different things. They never contradict each other but they are both a vital part of our walk with God.

God expects us to obey His written Word; it is unchanging, forever settled in heaven. But He also wants us to hear His voice and obey when He speaks to us. But you may be wondering, exactly how does God speak to us? Does He shout down from heaven or grace us with a visitation? Not usually! In Isaiah 30 we are told that we will hear a voice behind us.

Isaiah 30:21

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."

Romans 8:16 says that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit. That means that God's directions come from our inner man, the real you (spirit) inside, not outside, of you. "The Spirit Himself bears witness [testifies] with our spirit." (Romans 8:16)

It is your spirit being influenced by the Spirit of God! After you're born again, your spirit is a safe guide because you are born of God's Spirit. I heard a wonderful story recently, which illustrates my point. I have put it in my own words since the author is unknown.

A young man had attended Wednesday night Bible study at his church. The pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying The Lord's voice. The young man couldn't help but wonder, "Does God still speak to people?"

After service, he went out with some friends for coffee and dessert and they discussed the message. Several different people talked about how God had led them in different ways. (The Holy Spirit leads us with such gentle promptings and His still, small voice that we often do not realize that it is Him.)

It was about ten o'clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he prayed a simple, heartfelt prayer: "God...  If you still speak to people, speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey." As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought to stop and buy a gallon of milk. He shook his head and said out loud, "God is that you?" He didn't get a reply and continued on towards home.

Again, the urge, "Buy a gallon of milk." This time the young man thought about Samuel and how he didn't recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel had run to Eli. So he said, "Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk."

It didn't seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk anyway. He stopped at a convenience store, purchased the gallon of milk and started off towards home.

As he passed Seventh Street, he again felt the urge, "Turn down that street." "This is crazy," he thought and drove on past the intersection. Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street. At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh. Half jokingly, he said out loud, "Okay, God I will." He drove several blocks, when suddenly, he felt like he should stop. He pulled over to the curb and looked around.

He was in a semi-commercial part of town. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst of neighborhoods, either. The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed. Again, he sensed something, "Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street." The young man looked at the darkened house. There were no lights on, so it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep. He started to open the car door but then sat back in the car seat. "Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid." However, he could not shake the feeling that he should go and give them the milk.

Finally, he opened the car door. "Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to look like a fool or a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for something. But if they don't answer right away, I am out of here!" He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear some noise inside. A man's voice yelled out, "Who is it? What do you want?" Then the door opened before the young man could leave.  The man was standing there in his jeans and a t-shirt. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn't seem too happy to have a stranger standing on his doorstep. "What is it?" he said.

The young man thrust out the gallon of milk in his hand. "Here, I brought this to you." The man at the door grabbed the milk and rushed down the hallway, speaking loudly in Spanish. Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man inside was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face.

The man began speaking and half-crying, "We were just praying. We had some big bills this month and we ran out of money. We didn't have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and asking God to show me how to get some milk." From the kitchen his wife yelled out, "I asked him to send an Angel with some milk. Are you an Angel?" The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the money he had on him, then put it in the man's hand. He turned and walked back toward his car as tears were streaming down his face. He knew that God still answers prayers. And he was so grateful that God had used him to answer this one.

God does hear and answer our prayers. And He still speaks to us today. There are times we may have entertained angels unaware. But most often, God uses people to help us. Sometimes, God only needs to find people who are willing to listen to His voice and obey to get the job done.

Spend time alone with God and in His Word. Give Him first place in your life. No matter how busy we are, surely, we can take a few minutes to pray. Remember that prayer is simply talking to God straight from your heart.  You can transact heavenly business on earth in only a moment by slipping away to a quiet place alone with God. Talk things over with Him, then give Him a chance to speak to your heart by quietly waiting for a few minutes in expectation. If you ask in faith, expecting an answer, You will hear from your Father, God.

Our God is an Awesome God! He will take care of you.

-Walking in God's grace and favor,
